Theme 4

Respecting  choices

This theme looks at what choices we make as we’re dying – that’s when death doesn’t come suddenly but is the consequence of illness. Modern medical advances have made choices more complex - when is enough intervention enough? Three characters, Gina, Pa, and Robin  make very different decisions for themselves. There’s no judgment here, but there is advocacy, that true love is about respecting choices especially if these diverge from your own.
The last stories look at our partnering of the dying, how are we present? And what sensitivity do we need to discern what’s really required of us? We may, as Vasu found, need to tell the person that it’s okay to go, and may even demand that we absent ourselves – to create privacy, to enable the letting go.
